Hockney's Woldgate woods, in London

If you’ve ever stood before a wooded scene and tried to think about how you might capture something of the beauty you’re in, on canvas, then you will no doubt have been struck by confusion - visual confusion! There is so much to see, so much that demands your attention and too much to draw or paint.

Hockney’s Woldgate woods series, this painting is one of ten, are a master class in sublime observation, editing and creativity.

Late in July I spent a few hours in London enjoying Hockney’s work. This was the third time I’ve seen this painting first-hand (my first viewing was in 2012 at the RA). This occasion was a visual feast - and I gleaned much. This and the other pictures in this series are epic. Hockney’s picture of Woldgate woods is on show now at the Annely Juda gallery in London.
